Miriam Liston from Tramore will lead out the Ireland Masters team in the first ever ladies International Rules test against Australia in Charlestown on Saturday afternoon.
The former Waterford Wildcats basketball player was named joint captain alongside Etna Flanagan from Sligo.
"It was a really nice surprise and a big honour," she told WLR's Lár Na Páirce show. "These opportunities don't arise that often in your sporting career and certainly not in the latter stages! It's nice for my family, my friends and my club in Tramore."
23 counties are represented on the Irish side. "There's some really accomplished players on the team, lots of All Stars from around the country. Michaela Downey from Down, Louise Henchy from Clare, Noelle Early from Kildare, Diane Toner from Donegal, Mary Kirwan from Laois, there's a lot of talented players."
Stradbally's John Coffey will pull on the green shirt for the men's over 40s on Saturday while David Whelan from Sliabh gCua will line out in the over 50s match.
