Former Waterford boss Liam Cahill has been confirmed as the new Tipperary manager for a three year term.

The Ballingarry man informed the Déise county board on Friday last that he would not be seeking a fourth campaign in charge of Waterford.

His departure came just days after Tipperary parted company with Colm Bonnar in controversial fashion, despite him being just one year in the hot seat.

Cahill guided Waterford to the 2020 Munster and All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Finals and the 2022 Allianz National League title in his time in charge.

Cahill will be joined in his native Premier by his right-hand-man, coach Michael Bevans.

“After managing the Tipperary underage teams to success in the past, it is a huge honour for myself, my family and my club to be appointed the Tipperary Senior Hurling Manager. I look forward to the challenges that lay ahead and will commence the assembly of my backroom team in the coming weeks.”

Having first tasted inter-county success on the sidelines by steering Tipp’ to two Munster and one All-Ireland minor crowns - Cahill guided Tipperary's U21 side to All-Ireland titles in 2018 and 2019, and was widely expected to take over the senior side before Liam Sheedy took a second stint at the helm.

He won the Liam McCarthy as a premier player in 2001, and an All Star with it.

Tipperary GAA expressed their delight at the appointment wishing Liam and his management team the best in the next three years.

Waterford’s search for a new manager goes on with Stephen Molumphy, Tony Browne and Derek McGrath among the names mentioned. The county senior hurling championship begins next Thursday night, with the meeting of Dungarvan and Fourmilewater.
