Kevin Mahony is the August winner of the Waterford Sports Awards, in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.
Mahony was excellent throughout the course of the campaign for Ballygunner as they marched on to an outstanding twelfth consecutive Waterford Senior Hurling Championship final.
He notched 3-8 from play in August, starring in victories against Dungarvan, Lismore, De La Salle and Passage.
Speaking on accepting the award, Mahony said: “I’m very grateful to be chosen for the award. To be recognised by the committee is a very nice thing. Most importantly, it’s testament to the group we have and the work we’ve put in over the last few years more than anything. It’s about the team.”
Mahony and his Ballygunner teammates are now preparing to kickstart their Munster club defence - as they bid to create further history and be the first side ever to record a fourth successive provincial title in these parts. They’ll face the Limerick champions at the Gaelic Grounds on the 3rd of November. The 22-year-old is excited at the prospect of the upcoming provincial campaign.
“We’ve had that little bit of downtime after the county final to get the bodies right. There’s very exciting times ahead now in the next few weeks - we’re slowly building and really looking forward to the Munster Championship. Hopefully, we can defend our title.”
Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Waterford Sports Awards.
The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2025 where the first WLR Granville Waterford Sports Star of the Year will be revealed.
