Kelyn Cassidy is the November winner of the Waterford Sports Awards, in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.
Kelyn Cassidy won his fourth successive National Elite Boxing Championship title in November. He beat James Whelan of Dublin Docklands 5-0 with a dominant performance in the mens' 80kg national final - securing the national title for the fourth year in a row. The bout was Cassidy's first since his narrow defeats in Olympic qualifying, with both men having gone on to win Olympic gold and silver in his weight class.
Speaking when accepting the award, Kelyn said: “I’m over the moon - it was an unbelievable feeling to get the call to say that I had won the award. It’s great to get the recognition for all of the hard work that I’ve been putting in. I’m absolutely chuffed.”
2024 has been a whirlwind year for Cassidy and the Saviours Crystals star now has his sights set at going one even better in 2025.
“I’m delighted to be in the position that I’m in”, said Cassidy. “You need to always be on your game. It’s been an unbelievable year, I’ve travelled the world and boxed the best in the world and what a time I’ve had. I can’t wait now just to sit back with the fire lighting to reflect on everything - it’s been amazing. My girlfriend, my family, my friends and my community have been behind me from the very start and I’m looking forward to what 2025 has to hold - I’m so thankful for everybody’s support.”
Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Waterford Sports Awards.
The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel on January 11th 2025, where the first WLR Granville Waterford Sports Star of the Year will be revealed.
