Waterford's Kelyn Cassidy will have to wait a while longer to secure his 2024 Paris Olympics dream.
The Saviours Crystals fighter was in action in the quarter-finals of the men's light-heavyweight division at the European Games this afternoon, coming up against serial medallist, Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine.
Cassidy went into the bronze medal bout with two wins to his name. having seen off Norway's Mingaudas Gedminas and Welsh man Taylor Bevan in the early rounds.
The Ballybeg native fought valiantly throughout the three rounds, but ultimately lost out on a split decision, with all five judges awarding the second round to Cassidy and the third round to his Ukrainian opponent.
He will have further opportunities of qualification for Paris in the coming months, while Khyzhniak has secured his place in the semi-finals, as well as the Olympic Games.
Elsewhere, Dean Clancy has booked his place in Paris after a comprehensive unanimous victory over Italy's Gianluigi Malanga in the men's 63.5kg quarter-final.
Olympic Gold Medallist Kellie Hellington cruised through to the semi-finals, booking her place in Paris in the process, with a 4-1 win against Sweden's Agnes Alexiusson in the women's 60kg weight class.
Amy Broadhurst lost out on a split decision in the women's 66kg quarter-final bout against Great Britain's Rosie Joy Eccles. Jennifer Lehane also lost out, having been on the wrong side of a unanimous verdict in the women's 54kg quarter-final against Stanamira Petrova of Bulgaria.
Daina Moorhouse takes to the ring at 5.15pm against France's Wassila Lkhadiri in the women's 50kg bronze medal match, Michaela Walsh takes on Melissa Juvonen Mortensen of Denmark at 5.45pm in the 57kg class, while Aoife O'Rourke will complete the action for Team Ireland at 6.30pm at 75kg when she encounters Sweden's Love Nelli Holgersson.
