SETU Waterford Wildcats‘ stars and sisters Kate and Sarah Hickey are the February winners of the Waterford Sports Awards, in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.

February was an incredible month for the Hickeys as they both played starring roles – securing a regular-season National Super League title for the SETU Waterford Wildcats for the first time in 24 years. Kate and Sarah combined for a total of 127 points for the Wildcats as they recorded four successive victories against Trinity Meteors, Liffey Celtics, Killester and the University of Galway to secure the regular season crown for the first time since 2001.

The duo also represented Ireland internationally in February, playing in EUROBasket Qualifiers against France and Latvia, combining for a further 28 points across those two games. The Wildcats’ success story has been a family affair, as the sisters have been coached throughout by their mother, Jillian Hayes, a six-time Super League winner who was capped 67 times for Ireland.

February was a special month

Speaking when accepting the award, Sarah said: “It’s amazing to win the award. February was such a good month for us, a lot of tight games but we just kept going and winning the league for the first time in so long was brilliant for everyone in the club.”

Kate added: “Achieving what we’ve achieved has been brilliant and we’ll have great memories from that, and to do that with your sister and having her by your side on the court and all the way through definitely makes it even better.”

Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Awards.

The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2026, as the overall WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Star of the Year and next entrant to the Waterford Sporting Hall of Fame will be revealed.
