Waterford athletics legend John Treacy will be the official starter of this year's Dublin Marathon.

This year's event will mark the 30th anniversary of his win in the 1993 Dublin Marathon.

The Olympic Silver medalist and Irish marathon record holder ran 2:14.40 on the day to claim victory.

He says it's a great honour to be this year's starter.

“I’m delighted to be the official starter at the Irish Life Dublin Marathon. It’s 30 years since I won the race and when Jim (Aughney) gave me the call I was delighted to do it. I knew it was very much the tail-end of my career and I knew  it would be my last marathon really so I wanted to do it in Dublin and it was actually Noel Carroll  that got in touch and put the idea in my head."

"I dwelt on it for a while and said ‘yeah, it would be nice to finish in Dublin’ and so the Dublin Marathon enabled me to do that and it was a lovely day for me personally as well."

This year's Dublin Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 29th.
