Scottish police have opened an investigation after Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin was pelted with missiles during a Scottish Premier League win over Aberdeen yesterday.

Tramore native Goodwin was in charge at Pittodrie from February 2022 to January 2023, leaving Aberdeen after just 11 months.

Yesterday, during Dundee United's 1-0 win at Tannadice - Goodwin had a vodka bottle, coins and firelighters among other items thrown at him by the travelling support.

Tensions were high in the stands during the match but they boiled over when Kevin Holt headed home a stoppage-time winner to lift Goodwin’s side to within three points of third-placed Aberdeen.

“Things didn’t work out the way I would have liked it, or how they would have liked it, when I was Aberdeen manager, but I haven’t said anything derogatory about that football club,” said Goodwin.

“Objects were skimming over our heads. Not just mine but my backroom team, the linesmen and the fourth official. I'm curious to know how many things were picked up off the pitch but there was a considerable number of objects thrown in our direction. Just thankfully there was a real gust of wind and it affected their aim.”

“There's plenty of cameras at the game so hopefully these guys will be caught and thrown out of football for life,” he said. “I don't want to spend too much time talking about that. This win was all about my players; the attitude and their application they showed to win a tough game.”
