Rathgormack forward Conor Murray is calling on the county board to enter a team in Division 4 next year. Waterford have yet to appoint a new manager for 2024 and this has led to fears about what the future holds for Déise football.
“I think that it’s really important that Waterford have a team in the National League. There’s
talk of fielding a junior team, that's completely ridiculous in my opinion. It’s really important
that a team is fielded in Division 4. Not only fielded but any time we’re in Division 4, we’re
competing. I see no reason why that should be any different in the coming year.”
The board have been on the lookout for a new bainsteoir since the end of August and he would like to see that position filled as soon as possible. “Hopefully something can be put in place sooner rather than later. Look, the championships are over next week. The new manager coming in is already on the backfoot. He hasn’t seen any club championship so it’s a difficult start. A new manager needs to get his backroom team in place and meet with players. Look, the league doesn’t be long coming around. It’s nearly the end of October now. The more time you have to prepare, the better.”
He paid tribute to the recently departed Ephie Fitzgerald for his contribution to Waterford
football. “It was probably the most enjoyable two years I’ve had playing with Waterford.
There was a real sense of enthusiasm from himself and Peter Leahy."
