The Waterford ladies football team seek their first Munster title in 23 years against Kerry on Sunday afternoon.

Déise attacker Chloe Fennell would love to get her hands on a provincial medal and make her family proud. “It would mean so much. They don’t come around that often, senior finals, we haven’t been in one in six years. To get a senior Munster medal would be fantastic. My parents and all the parents have travelled all over the country to league games and to championship games. Just for them, just to make it worthwhile for them.”

Her daughter Róisín will be in the stand on Sunday. “She’s just over a year and a half. If I’m not kept fit by training, I’m kept fit running after her! She has travelled a fair bit. She went to Kildare, that was her first outing. She’s been at a good few of them. I don’t know how much she’s taking in but she’s going anyway!”

The Stradbally forward joined the senior squad in 2017. Her sister Nicola won an All Ireland intermediate medal with Waterford two years previous.

Chloe’s love of football came from her father Pat. “He was heavily involved as chairman in Stradbally. I went to every training session, I was stuck to his hip! I was trying to catch Size 5 balls being leathered in over the goal! That’s where I got stuck in. My sisters then trained me underage for the club. They brought me out. We had underage leagues and it went from strength to strength. We built the ladies club from there. Family are a big push for me.”

Fennell is delighted to be back on the Déise panel this season after two years away. She kicked three points in the win over Cork two weeks ago. “I had a good club campaign last year and I was like ‘I’ll give it another year of county and see if I’m able for it.’ I was delighted that Tomás brought me back in. You don’t realise what you’ve missed until you don’t have it. Going to training, talking to the girls and the social aspect of it. When you’re fit, you’re happy and you’re excited for things. It’s great to be back. I hadn’t seen some of the girls in a while.”
