Intermediate Camogie Final not played | Appeal pending with Munster Camogie

The Intermediate Camogie County Final was due to be underway on Sunday at 2 pm.

The tie was to be contested between Modeligo and Buterstown at the SETU Arena, but no game was played and we will now have to wait to find out what happens next; will Butlerstown be awarded a walkover and handed the title, or will the game be refixed for a later date?

Many of the Modeligo players - who also play football for Na Déise, were in Munster action on Saturday.

They lost to Clounmacon/Moyvane in the Munster club ladies' football semi-final, 3.14 to 2.12 at Cappoquin.

Therein lies the root of this ordeal, with both Na Déíse (football) and Modeligo (camogie) sharing their players across both codes.

WLR Sport understands that a request was filed with Munster LGFA by Na Déise to have their game moved back so as not to interfere with the camogie final, in which a large contingent of their players would be playing.

That request was filed shortly after Na Deise's Munster quarter-final win over Galtee Gaels of Limerick (October 14th) when it was confirmed that they would be continuing in the province. That appeal, as understood by WLR Sport, was denied.

While Na Déise had failed in their attempt to have the game moved, Modeligo requested that their game be moved back on grounds of player welfare.

The Intermediate county final was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 21st which would have clashed with the Munster club football semi. The game was moved to Sunday (October 22nd) by Waterford Camogie.

Modeligo filed an appeal - under grounds of player welfare - to have their game moved back, so as not to be playing two days back to back. That appeal was not granted, with the intermediate final set to go ahead as planned on Sunday.

WLR Sport understands that a subsequent appeal was submitted to Munster Camogie, an appeal which is still pending.

The referee reported for duty on Sunday and after being given the team sheets - with no Modeligo team present - it was deemed as a team not fielding. Butlerstown did report to the SETU Arena.

It is believed that Modeligo did not field a team for the decider on grounds of player welfare and safety.

The referee will now submit their report, which will be considered by the Waterford County Board and a decision on whether the game will be refixed or awarded to Butlerstown will be made in the coming days.

The referee has up to six days to file his report with Waterford Camogie, at which point the county executive would need to be assembled to decide the next steps.

While the game - which ultimately did not go ahead - was scheduled for 2 pm on Sunday, Modeligo, if they had played, would still have been short the services of one player who was playing in Ballymacabry's Munster senior ladies' football club championship quarter-final with Fethard ar Ardmore.

Whether the final is refixed, or simply awarded to Butlerstown remains to be seen, but whoever is eventually crowned Waterford Intermediate Camogie Champions will have until November 18th to prepare for their provincial campaign. The Waterford winner is due to play the Limerick winner in that game.

Waterford Camogie were unable to comment owing to the ongoing appeal with Munster Camogie.
