Former Déise defender Brian Flannery believes that the next Waterford minor hurling manager should be given at least two years in charge of the team. Waterford have gone through 12 minor bainsteoirs in the last 13 seasons.
"I just don't understand why we're changing the manager every year. No other county operates a system like that. If you look at a minor panel, there's a natural two-year cycle. If you have 34 in training there's at least half a dozen of those players who are underage again next year. There's a two-year cycle but there'll be a completely different management team in next year. I think it needs to be reviewed."
The Déise lost by 21 points to Tipperary in the Munster semi final on Tuesday night. Recent results are a cause for concern. "Since 2015, Waterford have played 23 championship games, they've won only five, drew one and lost 17. That's a win record of 22 per cent. If you're not getting to Munster finals, All Ireland quarter finals, semi finals, you have less chance of developing."
