Former Déise hurling manager Michael Ryan would like to see Stephen O'Keeffe back in a Waterford shirt.

The Ballygunner netminder was named man of the match in Sunday's county final against Mount Sion. “To me, Stephen O’Keeffe is best goalkeeper in the country,” Ryan told WLR’s On The Ball show. “I think he will someday go on to be an outstanding coach. He was in this year to talk to the Waterford Under 20 defenders. To beat Stephen O’Keeffe, you’ve got to produce the shot of the year. That’s how good he is. Not alone that, he organises his backs, his puckouts are very good, he’s so aware, he’s so alert. He’s also a very modest type of guy. I don't think there's ever been a better goalkeeper in Waterford than Stephen O'Keeffe.”

Ryan thinks that Davy Fitzgerald should try and get him back on board for 2023. "I'd be sitting outside his door and I'd be telling him 'until you commit to the cause, I'm staying here. I'm not leaving here until you say yes!' I hope he does because he's still a young man. He has so much to offer."
