Former Waterford boss Derek McGrath believes that Limerick defender Diarmaid Byrnes should be crowned Hurler of the Year at tonight's All Star ceremony in Dublin.

The Patrickswell man scored 36 points for the Shannonsiders in the championship this summer. McGrath was impressed with his displays all year long. "Go back to the Munster round robin games, he was particularly outstanding down in Cork when the pressure was on Limerick having underperformed in the league. He had a slight dip but not a major dip. You don't get Hurler of the Year for long range free taking but I thought his consistency over the six games was particularly outstanding."

Derek McGrath will pick his All Star fifteen on Lár Na Páirce from 6.10.
