Dungarvan manager Peter Smith believes that Patrick Curran should be considered for the Waterford captaincy next year.

The Déise attacker scored 1-9 against Fourmilewater last night in the first round of the senior championship.

"When you have a star player, you expect big things of him. Paddy delivers more times than not. Personally, I think he has put out enough messages to be looking for the captaincy of Waterford next year. That's how big I think he is. He's a great leader, he's popular. I'd really hope that he would be considered for something like that."

The Midleton native has been working with Curran for the past two seasons.

"He's like Conor Lehane, he's a special talent. It doesn't come around that often. When it does, I think it should be nurtured, looked after and put trust in. The ultimate trust would be something like that."
