Roanmore star Gavin O’Brien is the winner of the August WLR / Granville Hotel Monthly GAA Award.
O’Brien played a starring role for the Sky Blues throughout the course of their Waterford Senior Hurling Championship campaign - in which they reached the last four before an agonising one-point defeat to De La Salle.
The half-forward was immense throughout the course of the championship, with his contribution of 0-15 in the quarter-final victory over Mount Sion proving the highlight.
O’Brien contributed with 0-36 in the first three games of Roanmore’s campaign, having also shone in the victories over Lismore and Clonea. He scored 0-9 in the semi-final defeat, finishing the championship with 0-45.
Former Waterford captain Brian Flannery says O’Brien has been one of the most consistent performers at club level in the last decade.
“Gavin O’Brien has for the last decade been one of the best club hurlers in Waterford - he fits comfortably in any company. He is a player that carries a lot of the load for his side, and he has done so year after year after year.”
O’Brien believes hurling in Roanmore is in a good place to keep building and going forward.
“The club has been on a long road for the last ten years. We struggled to win senior matches a couple of years ago but now we’re performing in senior games. I’m so proud of everyone in our group.”
