Waterford footballers suffered an agonising one point defeat to Wicklow in their Division 4 National league opener at a blustery Fraher Field last night
The opening half was lacklustre for most parts, but Waterford finished strongly and hit five scores in a row to lead at the break by 0-7 to 0-1, debutant Sean Whelan-Barrett kicked two fine scores, Jason Curry nailed two frees while Aidan Trihy was also on target for the home side
Wicklow upped their game upon the resumption and a Patrick O'Connor goal following a neat move on 46 minutes left the minimum between the sides.
Gearóid Murphy put the visitors ahead for the first time on 59 minutes but Waterford hit back through Tommy Prendergast.
The sides were level going into the three minutes of injury time, and Wicklow goalkeeper Mark Jackson proved to be the match winner as his free sailed over as Waterford were guilty of over-carrying the ball in defence
It ended, Wicklow 1-7 Waterford 0-9.
Waterford travel to face Limerick in Round 2 next weekend.
