The Waterford senior footballers go in search of their first Tailteann Cup victory this evening when they take on Kildare in Fraher Field.

Paul Shankey's side lost out to Leitrim last time out and face a tough test against the Leinster side who beat Longford by 20 points last weekend.

The Waterford boss says his players are improving every time they take to the field - and that's always a welcome development.

"I'm delighted at every session, every week. The lads are always getting better. The performance was really good last Saturday against Leitrim. We played really well in the first half and ( it was a good competitive game and we finished strong as well, which is encouraging. The good news is the lads are getting better every time. We finished strong and we're happy enough with the performance."

Shankey says Kildare shouldn't be in the Tailteann Cup, and it will be a very big challenge for Waterford.

"Kildare are a Division 1 football team - due to circumstances this year, they find themselves where they are. It's a kind of a temporary phase for them and they obviously have a far stronger team. The Tailteann Cup is not where Kildare should be. That's obviously where they find themselves, but as a group, the lads are looking forward to it, but we're under no illusions. Obviously, they want to go out and compete the best they can."

"All we can ask for is that we play to our potential. Maybe a bit of that will be outside of our control at times against a very strong team, as in Kildare. As a group, we're really looking forward to it. It's great to have a team of that calibre coming to Dungarvan. The lads are going to give it everything."

Throw in in Dungarvan is at 5 o'clock.
