Fleetwood Defender Arrives at Waterford FC on Season Long Loan
Waterford FC have announced the signing of Will Johnson from sister club Fleetwood Town on a season-long loan.
The defender makes the move to the RSC, having come up through the Fleetwood Town academy where he joined in 2021.
The 20 year-old, who can play as a right back or centre back, penned his first professional deal with the Cod Army in November of 2022 before joining Barnoldswick Town on a short-term loan deal. He returned to Fleetwood in March 2023, where he was included in a matchday squad for the first time in their 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor.
He soon joined Marine AFC for the remainder of the 2022/23 season making 11 appearances across all competitions, before returning to Fleetwood where he scored in his first appearance for Fleetwood’s EFL Trophy’s 4-0 win over Leicester City.
A brief loan to Gateshead followed and he made his league debut for Fleetwood on Easter Monday last year, going on to make a total of seven appearances for Fleetwood’s first-team, as he now makes the move to the RSC for 2026.
Adding to the defensive options, Johnson is keen to get straight to work with the Blues, saying:
"I can't wait to get started in front of the fans at the RSC. I've heard a lot of great things about the club as a whole, so I'm really looking forward to getting to work now as a Waterford FC player."
Waterford Head Coach Jon Daly is delighted to welcome Johnson to the club for 2026, mentioning:
“I’m very pleased to secure Wills services for the 2026 season. He’s a versatile defender who brings extra competition to the back line.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Will to come in on loan and take the next steps to progress his career. Will is very highly regarded at Fleetwood Town FC and we are excited to get him in and look forward to helping him develop at Waterford FC.”
