"It was an almost perfect day" - Flannery hoping Deise can replicate Cork performance

Former Waterford senior hurling captain Brian Flannery is hopeful that the Deise can replicate the performance levels shown against Cork when they take on Tipperary in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship this Saturday.

A win for the Deise would hugely strengthen their chances of emerging from the province for the first time since the round-robin format was implemented.

Last time out, Davy Fitzgerald's men defied their doubters - producing an excellent performance to see off their near-neighbours on a scoreline of 2-25 to 1-25 at Walsh Park.

Flannery believes if Waterford can hit those heights again, then they are in with a great chance of recording back-to-back victories.

"There was good decision making all around against Cork", said the former Mount Sion man. "They were invariably in front of the posts. They weren't firing low percentage shots and that just steadied the nerves. All the way through, you had Dessie Hutchinson converting all of the placed balls - and those things matter."

"Waterford were in the ascendancy throughout and it was an almost perfect day", he continued. "There are very few areas where you'd be docking them points - nobody was ten out of ten, but there was nine out of tens and very few areas where you could say - we need to tighten up on that."

Flannery believes the scoreline is also a target that the Deise should be aspiring to reach for the rest of their provincial campaign.

"2-25, that's 31. It used to be twenty points would win you a game but now it's 30 - Limerick have made it that now. It's a brilliant scoreline, that's what we need to be reaching now."
