Former Galway hurling boss Cyril Farrell wasn't expecting Kieran Donaghy to join Micheal Donoghue's backroom team this season. The Kerry legend was confirmed as the new performance coach with the Tribesmen earlier this week.

"I thought he might go for a hurling man. There were rumours that we would be getting Eamon O'Shea into the backroom team, he'd be a good friend of Micheal's, he's lecturing at NUIG and his young fella won a minor with Galway last year. Tipperary have snapped him up. It's a surprise. If he was going in with the footballers, it wouldn't be as much of a surprise. Time will tell. Maybe he will give us that little bit extra."

Galway arrive in Walsh Park this afternoon with three wins and a draw. Farrell says that Donoghue has been looking to deepen his squad during this Division 1B campaign after last year's All Ireland final loss to Limerick.
