Waterford FC 5

St. Mochta’s 1

FAI Cup Second Round

Waterford FC are safely through to the next round of the FAI Cup following a resounding victory against St. Mochta’s on a 5-1 scoreline at the RSC.

Tommy Lonergan scored twice on a day when he put pen to paper on a permanent move to the club, while captain Padraig Amond, Conan Noonan and Trae Coyle also got in on the act.

Lonergan opened the scoring on just ten minutes, capitalising on a defensive error before rounding the opposition goalkeeper and slotting home. He then turned provider 25 minutes after, as Conan Noonan was on hand to grab his fifth goal of the campaign.

Moments later, the visitors thought they may have had an avenue back into the game as Dean Casey converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 on the stroke of half time.

The Blues continued to test St. Mochta’s shotstopper Adam Hayden all evening, but they left it late to make 100% certain of their progress.

Trae Coyle drove home his first goal for the club on 83 minutes – before debutant Finlay Armstrong set up Lonergan to double his tally two minutes later, and another minute after that – another fine Armstrong cross was headed home powerfully by who else by Padraig Amond to cap off a fine night’s work.
