Evan McLaughlin joins Waterford FC ahead of 2026 season

Waterford FC is thrilled to announce the permanent signing of midfielder Evan McLaughlin from Cork City FC for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old becomes the latest addition to Jon Daly’s squad as the Blues prepare for the 2026 League of Ireland campaign, linking up with former Cork teammate Benny Couto and the rest of the Waterford squad.

From Derry City to Cork City: McLaughlin’s journey

Evan McLaughlin began his career in the Derry City FC academy, making his senior debut in 2021 during a 2-0 victory over Waterford at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium — a match in which he opened the scoring in the first half.

Over the next two seasons, McLaughlin played a key role for the Candystripes in league, cup, and European competitions. He also spent part of 2022 on loan at NIFL Premiership side Coleraine before returning to Derry for the 2023 season.

At the end of 2023, McLaughlin departed Derry and joined Cork City, helping Tim Clancy’s side secure the First Division title. His performances earned him a place in the PFAI Team of the Year, finishing the season with 36 appearances and five goals across all competitions.

2025 season highlights

McLaughlin continued his strong form in 2025, contributing seven goals and four assists in all competitions. He notably scored a semi-final brace against St. Patrick’s Athletic, securing Cork City’s place in the 2025 FAI Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium, where he started in a 2-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers.

Excited to join Waterford FC

Speaking to the club media about his move, McLaughlin said:

“I’m delighted to finally be here at the club. After talking to Jon, and seeing the facilities here, it was an easy decision to join. I’m looking forward to getting to work now, meeting all the lads, and playing in front of the Waterford fans next year.”

Jon Daly welcomes McLaughlin to the Blues

Head Coach Jon Daly expressed his delight at securing the midfielder:

“I’m really pleased to secure Evan’s signature and bring him to Waterford FC. He’s a very talented player that will add more quality to our already excellent options in the midfield and attacking third. Competition for places across all areas of the pitch is vital.

Evan has a real desire to improve and develop, and we believe this is the perfect environment for him to take the next step in his career.”
