
Ferrybank AC athlete Ellis McHugh has been crowned as the overall winner of the Waterford and St. Dominic Credit Union Juvenile Athlete of the Year for 2024.
The awards ceremony was held at the SETU Arena on Sunday afternoon last.
Ellis was initially named the winner of the March 2024 award and her achievements included:
- 1st in the pentathlon at intermediate level with the Ireland Team Schools International Athletics Board.
- 1st in the pentathlon in the Munster Schools Championships at intermediate level as well as posting a championship record.
- 1st in the triple jump in the Munster Schools Championships at U17 level as well as posting a championship record.
- 1st in the 300m at the Munster Schools Championships at intermediate level.
- 1st in the 80m hurdles at the Munster Schools Championships at intermediate level.

The other monthly winners were: Evan Walsh (St. Joseph’s AC); Petra Igwe (Ferrybank AC); Eddie Raicevic (Finisk Valley AC); Lily-May Queally (KCK AC); Lily Ryan (St. Joseph’s AC); Lucy Clinton (Waterford AC); Aoibhinn Byrne (Tramore AC); Niamh McGrath (Tramore AC)
Recently retired Olympian Thomas Barr was the guest speaker on the day – he congratulated all of the winning athletes and offered them advice and inspiration for the years ahead.
A delighted Ellis McHugh spoke of her shock on winning the overall award, acknowledging her delight at winning the monthly equivalent – and thanked her parents, family and friends as well as her coaches for their role in her ongoing development.
The adjudicators for this year’s awards were Catherine Power, Jordan Norris and Robert Grace.
The 2025 awards will mark 24 years of the awards in Waterford – and Ali Lennon of Ferrybank AC has won the most recent award for her performances in February.
