Waterford Under 20 forward Charlie Treen fired 1-4 from play as Abbeyside beat local rivals Dungarvan 2-19 to 0-15 under the Saturday night lights in Fraher Field and advanced to the semi finals.
Treen and Eoin 'Killer' Kiely netted in either half as the Villagers punished opposition turnovers and delivered their first derby win since 2013. Top scorer Michael O'Halloran weighed in with ten points (seven frees).
Dungarvan talisman Patrick Curran scored four points from play in his duel with county team mate Conor Prunty. Michael Kiely (0-5) and Eoin O'Callaghan (0-3) also impressed up front. The Blues couldn't find a green flag however as five goal chances went awry in the second half.
On a dull evening, a heavy downpour cleared off just before throw in. Despite shooting nine wides, Abbeyside edged the first half exchanges 1-8 to 0-9. On fifteen minutes, David Collins intercepted a Kealan Daly pass out of defence, powered forward and laid off to Eoin Kiely who billowed the roof of the net. Michael O'Halloran, Charlie Treen, Michael Kiely and Willie Beresford all raised white flags. Dungarvan's Michael Kiely and Patrick Curran also looked threatening with three points apiece.
Curran's fourth from play made it a one point game at the start of the second half but that was as close as it got. Turnovers continued to cost the boys in blue as Abbeyside pulled away in the third quarter. After a low shot from Joe Duggan was saved by Lar Power, Eoin Kiely raised a white flag at the other end.
Dungarvan spurned two more goal chances. Gavin Power dropped a ball when he was put through by Patrick Curran before Sean Crotty drove a shot across the face of goal. Frustration for coach Eoin Cadogan on the sideline. Eoin O'Callaghan kept their challenge alive with two points.
Charlie Treen and the Kielys remained menacing up top for Abbeyside while O'Halloran added six second half points to his tally. Two minutes into injury time, substitute Brian Callaghan sprayed a ball across to Treen who fired to the far corner of the net. Back in the last four for the first time in six years.
