The Waterford camogie team are through to the All Ireland semi finals for the first time since 1959.
The Déise are on the road to Croker next Saturday after a 3-16 to 1-12 win over Limerick at a sunny Semple Stadium this afternoon. Niamh Rockett goaled twice, Beth Carton scored 1-6 while Lorraine Bray shot three points in a Player of the Match performance.
Waterford led 2-15 to 1-6 at the break with eight different players on the scoresheet. Rockett found the top corner of the net in the fourth minute after she was picked out by Abby Flynn. Derek Lyons' side used the ball smartly and opened up an eight point advantage during the first quarter.
Rebecca Delee hit back for Limerick with a stunning goal on 16 minutes. She gave Brianna O'Regan no chance with a top corner strike.
Waterford finished the half strongly however as Carton raised another green flag on 24 minutes. Limerick's afternoon got worse when Sophie O'Callaghan was red carded for a high challenge on Clara Griffin.
It took the leaders twelve minutes to open their account in the second half. Rockett collected a Bray delivery and blasted to the roof of the net (3-15 to 1-9). Caoimhe Costelloe sent over seven second half points and nine in total for the Shannonsiders. Rebecca Delee won a penalty with ten minutes left but goalkeeper Claire Keating struck the post.
Bray covered blade of grass in the second half and added her point from play in injury time. Limerick finished with thirteen players as full back Muireann Creamer got her marching orders on two yellows. The only worry for Waterford was a late hamstring injury to attacker Abby Flynn.
