Interim boss Darren Fletcher has challenged Manchester United’s players to prove they belong at the club and to make sure this season isn’t wasted after Sunday’s FA Cup exit to Brighton.
United suffered a 2-1 third-round defeat at Old Trafford, with Brajan Gruda and Danny Welbeck scoring for the Seagulls. Benjamin Sesko added a late goal, and teenage substitute Shea Lacey saw red for two bookable offences. This defeat comes just 11 days into 2026, following United’s early Carabao Cup exit.
Fletcher said whoever takes over as interim manager—Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick—will focus solely on Premier League matters. He urged the squad to target Champions League qualification, saying: “It’s about everyone. The players must take responsibility, improve quickly, and rise to the challenge. Don’t waste the season.”

He acknowledged United are “not in a great moment” despite sitting seventh, three points from fourth, but insisted the current group can qualify. “Difficult times show true character. Players must dig in, show they want to be part of Manchester United’s future, and learn from this,” Fletcher added.
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler praised his side’s togetherness and said the win showed that squad players can make a real impact.
