Waterford hurling legend Dan Shanahan is set to join the Laois management team as a selector.

The Lismore man announced his retirement from playing last week after thirty years of service to his club.

Laois' County Board announced yesterday that Tipperary man and former Deise selector Willie Maher will take over as their new senior hurling manager.

Maher succeeds Seamus 'Cheddar' Plunkett in the role, after the Leinster men were subjected to relegation from the Liam MacCarthy Cup earlier this year.

The O'Moore County have retained their Division 1 status in the National League.

Maher led Tipperary to the All-Ireland Minor title in 2012, and has won back-to-back Dublin club crowns coaching Cuala.

He coached Bennettsbridge in Kilkenny in recent seasons, where Shanahan has also been a regular fixture on the sidelines.

Maher and Dan have worked together in the past, serving as selectors for Waterford under Derek McGrath.

Shanahan has been involved in coaching various sides while playing for Lismore in recent seasons - having been involved in set-ups with the Waterford senior hurlers, the Waterford camogie team, Lismore, Colligan, Bennettsbridge and Sliabh gCua among others.

In a statement - the Laois county board welcomed the appointment of Willie Maher.

"Laois GAA are delighted to announce that Willie Maher's name was submitted to the Laois GAA Executive by the hurling selection committee tonight for the position of senior hurling manager and was ratified accordingly."

It has yet to be formally announced that Shanahan is joining the Laois set-up, but the news has been reported by multiple outlets such as Sky Sports and the Irish Independent.
