Damien Vereker is the July winner of the Waterford Sports Awards, in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.
Vereker secured his qualification to the Paralympics by winning a grand haul of five medals at the National Paracycling Championships alongside his pilot Michell McLaughlin. It will be a second Paralympics for the Larchville man having represented Ireland in Rio in 2016, and he will be hoping to build on an 8th place finish last time out.
Speaking on accepting the award, Vereker said: “It was a very welcome piece of news when I got the call, it was really unexpected. Thanks to WLR and the Granville Hotel. I’m really delighted and proud to accept this on behalf of the big team of people behind me in Waterford. I’m buzzing to get out to Paris and get started.”
Vereker’s Paralympic campaign gets underway on August 28th, and Damien says the support of everyone in Waterford ahead of the games has been amazing.
“I couldn’t do it without them - the support from the people of Larchville, Lisduggan and Lismore. It’s just unbelievable - and of course, the lads in the Comeragh Cycling Club. I’m really just overwhelmed by the level of support that I get. I’m really proud to be accepting this award.”
Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Waterford Sports Awards.
The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2025, where the first WLR Granville Waterford Sports Star of the Year will be revealed.
