They had to come from behind to get the job done, but after 90 tense minutes in Cahir, Waterford's Interleague Youths are Munster Champions.

Conor Coad's team beat Cork 2-1 in the final to claim the competition's inaugural piece of silverware.

Revenge was the order of the day for Waterford with Cork beating them in two previous finals and having come out on top when the sides met in the group stage also.

The first half had chances for both teams, but neither managed to convert. Cork broke the deadlock just before the hour mark when Geoff Zeph headed home past the Waterford keeper.

"To give away the first goal was always going to give ourselves a mountain to climb. To be fair to this group, they're a real good group of young men who when they have a challenge put in front of them don't shirk it, they stand up to it. I was really happy to see them get the equaliser and then have the character to go on and win it. It was the second game in a row that they've had to do that," said the manager.

It did not take long for Waterford to find that equalizer. A penalty struck by Jack Caulfield bounced off the upright, with fellow Tramore man Callum Barry reacting quickest to send the ball to the back of the net.

"The two of them were trying to tell me that it was a Tramore routine, playing the 1-2 off the post and then the rebound," Coad joked. The FAI Junior Cup winning manager added "We actually spoke about it at halftime, that it was a game of percentages and making sure that we were on our toes for set pieces and situations like that. Great to see him react to it and a really good finish because he had a bit to do with that."

Approaching full time, with six minutes left to play, Scott Collins proved himself the hero when he blasted home to the top corner past Cork netminder Robert Barry.

Coad's side advanced to the national stage of the competition where they will play in the semi-finals, with their opponents still to be decided.

"We'll see who comes through the other provincial finals. Nice to be in the hat for it and nice to be the Munster reps for it. We'll take it a game at a time like we've been doing so far and we'll give it a good go," said Coad.
