A proposed rule could stop clubs from fielding two teams at the senior level, a move that may impact Ballygunner in 2025.
The Irish Examiner reports that Central Council will debate the change this weekend, after Ballygunner’s second team won the Premier Intermediate title and became eligible to join their senior side next season.
According to the report, the GAA turned down Waterford County Board’s request to accommodate both Ballygunner teams in the senior championship.
The club now awaits a ruling from Central Council, while Waterford prepares to present an alternative proposal.
Club chairman Dave Sheahan told the Examiner that the situation sparked strong debate within Ballygunner.
He warned that the GAA should not restrict successful clubs and raised concerns about selecting and separating squads if both teams enter senior competition.
Central Council will decide the matter on Saturday.
