Waterford's Kelyn Cassidy is one step closer to achieving his dream of boxing for Ireland at the Olympic Games.

The Ballybeg native picked up a win in his opening bout at the Olympic qualifiers in Bangkok earlier this morning, advancing through the round of 64 with a split-decision victory over German Delil Dadeav.

The result leaves Cassidy within three fights of boarding the plane to Paris later this summer.

He steps back through the ropes again on Monday for the round of 32 where he will meet Abhimanyu Loura, an Indian National Championships bronze medalist.

Loura beat Bulgarian Bulgaria’s Kristiyan Nikolov 3-0 on the judges scorecards in his curtain raiser.
