Waterford finished strongly to run out 1-13 to 1-5 winners over Wexford in the first round of the Division 1 National Camogie League at Enniscorthy this afternoon. Déise All Star Beth Carton struck nine points (six frees and three from play) and league debutant Sarah Lacey got two as the visitors outclassed their opponents.
A goal from captain Niamh Rockett after 28 minutes gave Waterford an eight point lead against an understrength home side. Five Carton points put them 1-7 to 0-3 ahead at the break.
Wexford battled back in the second half and Anais Curran fired home a stunning goal on 40 minutes to leave only two points between the teams. A wonder point by Carton settled Waterford however. They hit the last six scores with Lacey and sub Orla Hickey also on target.
