Waterford were no match for Carlow in this Allianz National Football league Division 4 South opener in Fraher Field on Saturday evening.

The home side did kick the opening score through Stephen Curry as both sides cancelled each other out early on. It was the visitors (who had a goal disallowed for a square ball) who held a 0-9 to 0-5 interval advantage, as the Déise kicked six wides in that opening period.

Niall Carew's charges bossed the second-half as they ran out comfortable winners. Lively wing forward Jamie Clarke netted their first goal, while two further green flags followed thanks to substitute Colm Hulton and a goal of the season contender in injury time from Conor Crowley.

The home side managed just five points from play as goalkeeper Paudie Hunt converted a '45, while Jason Curry top scored for the Déise with three pointed frees. Overall Carlow were the better side and look good to reach the knockout stages.

A difficult start for new Waterford manager Shane Ronayne, but his side have no time to rest on their laurels as they face another South-East derby next weekend, with a trip to Wexford next Saturday afternoon (3pm throw-in at Chadwicks Wexford Park).
