Ireland captain Caelan Doris believes Saturday’s 42-21 win over England has set a new standard for the squad.
Andy Farrell’s side delivered Ireland’s biggest ever victory at Twickenham. The performance silenced critics after a heavy opening loss to France and a patchy win over Italy.
A New Reference Point
Doris said the display now provides a benchmark for the team.
“I spoke about Paris being a reference point,” he said. “Hopefully we’d see a steep incline in performance.
“This will now be a reference point. It was a proper good performance and gives us belief.
“There has always been belief in camp. You saw that in how we played.
“The atmosphere was unbelievable. Hopefully we gave people at home and here a bit of joy. We certainly enjoyed it.”
Ireland’s previous biggest away win over England was 32-15 in 2022.
Doris Leads From the Front
Doris produced a commanding display in south-west London. Farrell praised his captain’s influence.
“I thought he had his best game in a good while,” said Farrell. “He was immense in the carry. That’s Caelan at his best.
“He led from the front and got us over the gainline. It was outstanding. But every player contributed.”
Five-Try Statement
Ireland led 22-7 at the break. Jamison Gibson-Park, Robert Baloucoune and Tommy O’Brien scored first-half tries.
Dan Sheehan and Jamie Osborne added further tries after the interval. Jack Crowley kicked four conversions and three penalties.
Farrell praised his side’s intensity.
“It looked like we were hunting people down,” he said. “We started well and got the bonus point.
“Our kick-chase and breakdown work were excellent. There were no egos. Everyone worked for each other.”
Focus Turns to Dublin
Ireland now have a rest week before home games against Wales and Scotland.
They remain in the hunt for the Triple Crown. They also hope to pressure defending champions France.
Asked about the title race, Farrell kept his focus narrow.
“What will be, will be,” he said. “We’ll review how we’ve grown.
“The key is to keep improving over the next two weeks. That’s all that matters.”
