Brickeys prevail in premier intermediate decider

Brickey Rangers will play senior hurling in 2025.

Captain Oran Keevers raised the Pat Hunt Cup following a thrilling 1-23 to 0-22 win against Clashmore/Kinsalebeg in the Fraher Field sunshine. Man of the match Tom O'Connell shot eight points (six in the second half) while Cormac Deevy (1-2) and Sean Ronayne (0-4) also shone for the black and amber. Brickeys outscored their opponents 12-3 in the last 23 minutes.

Former Waterford attacker Brian O'Halloran hit five points from play for Clashmore before he was surprisingly substituted after 43 minutes. Centre back Tadhg De Burca slotted five long range frees.

The sides were level nine times during an end to end first half as they went in all square (0-14 to 1-11). Brickeys goal getter Cormac Deevy beat three defenders and rattled the roof of the net after just 90 seconds. His seventh green flag of the 2024 championship. Clashmore/Kinsalebeg played with the breeze towards the county goal and hit back with four unanswered points. Tadhg De Burca belted over two monster frees while cousins Ed and Brian O'Halloran scored from play. Brian O'Halloran tormented the Brickeys full back line as he ended the opening half with four points. Deevy delivered 1-2 at the other end. Amazingly, 17 players got on the scoresheet (nine from Brickeys and eight from Clashmore).

The first five points of the second period belonged to Clashmore. De Burca and Paul O'Connor put over two frees each while O'Halloran hit his fifth from play. 0-19 to 1-11 with 40 minutes on the clock.

With the breeze at their backs, Brickeys shot nine unanswered points in eleven minutes. Tom O'Connell accounted for five, Sean Ronayne struck two while Sean Ronayne and Conor Whelan also worked the umpires as the black and amber turned a five point deficit into a four point advantage.

Paul O'Connor and Ronan Fitzgerald narrowed the gap to two before the hard working Ronayne rifled over his third point of the second half. O'Connell punched the air when he split the posts in front of the bank. Cillian Ryan, Oran Keevers and Mark Cummins kept the Clashmore at bay in the closing minutes as an injury time single from substitute Dan Kelly sealed a famous win.
