Waterford FC 1 Sligo Rover 2
Waterford FC added to their cup anguish as Sligo Rovers came from behind to take all three points at the RSC in the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division.
Danny Ventre was in charge of the side following John Coleman’s absence due to a medical procedure and he made three changes with Rowan McDonald, Tommy Lonergan and Kyle Whyte all dropping to the bench with Andy Boyle and Sam Glenfield returning to the side while there was also a first start for new signing Muhammadu Faal.
The first chance came Sligo’s way early in the game when Will Fitzgerald’s cross was headed onto the Waterford crossbar by Owen Elding and moments later Fitzgerald had a shot blocked by Ronan Mansfield.
There was good counter attack from the home side when Amond delivered a decent ball into the area but Conan Noonan couldn’t get a proper touch on it.
Faal then had a couple of chances, the first a good run down the right and when he cut into the top of the area his shot was blocked by Ollie Denham and then Padraig Amond sent him away but he fired his shot left of the upright.
The goal came on 37 minutes when Sam Glenfield dropped a long ball in between the Sligo centre halves where Noonan had run. He let the ball bounce across him before hitting it on the volley past Sam Sargeant.
Sligo really upped the tempo in the second half and pressed Waterford back and they got their equaliser on 73 minutes when Jad Hakiki scored from close range after a Fitzgerald shot deflected off Padraig Amond into his path.
The Connacht side continued to take the game to the Blues and the winner came three minutes from time courtesy of Owen Elding who beat the offside trap to race into the area and slip the ball under McMullan.
