Waterford FC are still searching for their first win of the campaign following a comprehensive loss at the hands of newly promoted Dundalk at Oriel Park.
Jon Daly was forced into a number of changes with Podge Amond dropping to the bench for the first time and John Mahon's injury forcing a defensive reshuffle. Ronan Mansfield came in for his first start after a decent showing following his introduction last week as Daly reverted to three at the back with Cian Barrett joining Mansfield and Hayden Cann. Benny Couto made way for Jesse Dempsey while Dean McMenamy and Conor Carty came in for Trae Coyle and Amond respectively.
And while Dundalk enjoyed a huge amount of possession in the opening period they had to wait until the thirtieth minute for the breakthrough which was a little fortuitous when Cian Barrett lost his footing at the wrong time as Daryl Horgan's delicate cross was headed home unchallenged by Ronan Teahan. Dundalk continued to build on their possession and had a second minutes before the break when Horgan split the Blues' defence with a wonderful pass that found Declan McDaid in space and he calmly lobbed the ball over Stephen McMullan.
Once again, Daly made changes at the break with Trae Coyle and Sam Glenfield coming in for Barrett and Jorgen Voilas and a change of formation seemed to settle the Blues who forced a number of corners.
And the visitors best chance arrived just after the hour when Amond found Carty and his curling left footer was destined for the top corner but Conor Kearns stretched to somehow palm it away.
Six minutes later Kearns' participation came to an end with an unfortunate leg injury that forced a 15 minute stoppage with veteran Peter Cherrie coming in for the Lilywhites between the posts. But it was the home side that reacted best to the break with Horgan reacting to a cross which forced a big save from McMullan and he followed up to slot the ball home.
There was plenty of time for substitute Eoin Kenny to bag a brace, the first coming seconds after his introduction as he beat McMullan at the near post while he made it five nil six minutes later.
