Waterford FC 1 Galway United 0
Waterford FC scored their first win over Galway United in nearly three years with another battling display at the RSC.
John Coleman kept faith with the side that delivered two wins last weekend and they started in much the same fashion with some controlled football and a few chances but the Galway defence held firm.
Conan Noonan should have done better on 17 minutes when he received a great ball from Tommy Lonergan but he blazed his effort over the bar. A Ryan Burke shot was also off target 8 minutes later while a Pat Hickey header over the bar was as much as Galway could muster.
The goal arrived on 27 minutes when Noonan delivered a great corner from Waterford’s left and Darragh Leahy’s glancing header found the net.
Galway upped the ante after the break and McMullan was forced to save a long range effort from David Hurley. But the home side weathered the storm and grew in confidence with Amond being denied by Brendan Clarke on 54 minutes and again Clarke saved Galway when he stopped Lonergan after he ran twenty yards before shooting.
It was Clarke again who came to the rescue seven minutes from time when he saved brilliantly from Noonan and the follow up from Kyle White blazed over. McMullan produced a top class save to deny Hickey from close range with five minutes remaining and the Blues then managed the six minutes of added time in style to secure their fourth win on the trot.
