Galway United 3 Waterford FC 1

Waterford FC made the long journey to Galway for a midweek game that ultimately delivered little as they fell to the champions by three goals to one.

Keith Long made five changes to the side that drew at home to Wexford with Rowan McDonald, Barry Baggley, and Harry Nevin all starting for the first time in weeks while Connor Parsons returned having missed the Wexford game and Roland Idowu started.

Ed McCarthy got his first of two goals on 19 minutes when he raced through the Blues' defence before firing past Sam Sargeant against the run of play.

He added his second four minutes before the break with a similar effort but with his left foot instead of his right!

Former Blue Wassim Aouachria got Galway's third after picking up a great pass from David Hurley and slotting the ball under Jason Healy.

Sam Perry picked up the consolation goal for Waterford four minutes from time when Ryan Burke's deep cross was headed back across goal by Ronan Coughlan and he headed into an empty net.
