Waterford FC 0 Sligo Rovers 4
Waterford FC’s losing streak has been extended to six games after they lost out to Sligo Rovers at the RSC.
There were changes a plenty from Keith Long as he switched five in his starting eleven – Rowan McDonald picked up an injury against Shamrock Rovers last week and missed out while Conan Noonan returned after missing out because of his loan agreement. Ben McCormack, Sam Glenfield, Dean McMenamy and Ryan Burke all dropped to the bench with James Olayinka, Trae Coyle, Kyle White and Tommy Lonergan restored to the side.
It was the visitors who started the brightest as they forced a number of corners in the opening minutes. Will Fitzgerald delivered some good balls into the area with Cian Kavanagh going close with a header before Gareth McElroy rose unchallenged to head home the first goal on 8 minutes.
Fitzgerald was involved again three minutes later as he found Reece Hutchinson on the left wing and he floated a great ball to the back post where Owen Elding was able to head home for the Bit O’ Red’s second.
Waterford’s first chance came just two minutes before the break as Tommy Lonergan fired a free kick off the wall but it came back to him and he hit a low bolt but Sam Sargeant was perfectly placed to save with ease.
The Blues were reduced to ten men on the hour when Kyle White was shown a second yellow card and they were further punished two minutes later when Cian Kavanagh pounced on a loose ball after Stephen McMullan failed to hold a corner.
It was comfortable for Sligo as Waterford could not muster an attack and they finished in style when Conor Malley slotted a great ball through for Francely Lomboto and he hit a right footed effort that McMullan could only parry and the ball ended in the net.
