Blues boss Long sets sights on away win at "difficult place to go," in Galway

Waterford FC aim to tighten their grip on third place in the League Of Ireland Premier Division tonight when they head to Eamonn Deacy Park to face Galway.

The Blues lead the Tribesmen by six points in the standings with the hosts looking for their first win in three games, having lost on the road to Shels and drawn at home to Bohs.

A win on Dyke Road would make it three in a row for Keith Long's side, who have now gone well clear of the expectations at the start of the season.

However, a win away to Galway is not a simple task for Waterford. Their last win out West was in 2007 when first-team coach David Breen was still lacing up his boots and tucking in shin pads for the Blues.

"It'd be really nice if we were able to go up there and get a win," said Head Coach Keith Long.

"A very difficult place to go as we all know. A real challenge for us but competition is high amongst the players. The atmosphere amongst the players is really good. We've won the last two, so it would be really nice to go there and win again."

Long's sentiments are echoed by his defender Kacper Radkowski who notes the level of competition seen in training every day.

"That's a good boost for a team. Everyone wants to improve. The competition in the team is important and it's growing. Everybody wants to play and everybody is working hard, so it's good."

In their meetings so far this season, Galway hold a narrow edge, winning one and drawing one.

Radkowski recognises the threat posed by Galway, and importantly, the advantage they draw from being in Eamonn Deacy Park.

They are a good team. They're very physical and they play really good at home so we have to make a good team performance to get some points there. For sure it will be a tough game but we go there to make it three points."

WLR will bring you live commentary of the game on Friday evening from 7.30 pm thanks to McConnell's Toyota Waterford.
