Waterford FC took all three points with a two, one win over neighbours Wexford at the RSC last night.
The Blues opened the scoring on seven minutes when referee Declan Toland spotted a handball inside the Wexford area and pointed to the spot. Junior Quitinrna stepped up to send Paul Hunt the wrong way for the early lead.
Shane Griffin’s long-range effort shaved the crossbar four minutes later but the sides were level just before the half-hour when Waterford conceded a free-kick just outside the area and Conor Crowley fired a wonderful effort past Brian murphy.
The lead was restored six minutes later when Phoenix Patterson made a great run from the right, found Jeremie Milambo who created space for a shot. Patterson kept running and when Milambo’s effort fell his way, he turned and slipped it under Hunt.
Both sides had chances in the second half with Hunt denying Louis Britton and substitute Tom Considine, who had only just entered the game, headed Aaron Dobbs cross onto the crossbar with his first touch.
In the end, Waterford held on to extend their lead at the top of the table and they now travel to Turners Cross on Monday evening to face Cork City who lie in second.
