Galway United 2 Waterford FC 4

Waterford FC eliminated one of the longest records in League of Ireland football as they beat Galway United at Eamonn Deacy Park for the first time since 2007.

John Coleman’s side saw no changes from the team that started the FAI Cup win over St Mochta’s last week so there were league debuts for Jordan Rossiter and Finlay Armstrong.

The Blues enjoyed a couple of early chances with the best falling to Amond who beat the defence to find himself one on one with the goalkeeper but Evan Watts got down well to palm away the shot.

However, Amond was involved in the opening goal as he sent Noonan away and from the tightest of angles he blasted across Evan Watts to the bottom corner on 31 minutes.

Galway’s best chance came five minutes before the break when Vincent Borden sent a lovely cross in for Jeannot Esua who hit the ball on the volley but Stephen McMullan was equal to it.

The Blues got the best possible start to the second half when Rowan McDonald lobbed a delicate ball over the defence and Amond got on the end of it to slot it home.

A David Hurley free kick was headed home by Stephen Walsh on 59 minutes but Waterford restored their two goal advantage on 73 minutes when Ryan Burke met a Conan Noonan free kick at the back post and when Watts blocked his effort, Darragh Leahy was on hand to turn the ball over the line.

Galway debutant Dara McGuinness reduced the deficit again just two minutes later when he fired home but when Tommy Lonergan was bundled over in the box moments later, Amond stepped up to fire to the bottom corner.

Galway did try to get back into the game but the visitors held firm to record an historic victory.
