Waterford FC’s winning streak of six games came to an end when they lost to a resolute Wexford side by a goal to nil in their SSE Airtricity League encounter at the RSC.
Despite a bright start, the Blues found themselves behind after 8 minutes when a Brandon McCann cross was met by an unmarked Aaron Dobbs and he headed home.
The Blues didn’t panic but found the Wexford defence holding firm and they repelled each attack.
Waterford’s best opportunity of the opening half came courtesy of Barry Baggley and Ronan Coughlan on 25 minutes when Baggley intercepted the ball on halfway and bore down on the Wexford penalty area. His delicate chip found Coughlan but he just couldn’t direct the ball on target.
A free kick just before half time in a good position was also blazed over the bar by Christopher Conn Clarke.
Just like Friday evening, the Blues started the second half with more intensity and a spark that had been missing. Coughlan went close when he picked up a Roland Idowu pass from the right but his shot flashed across the face of goal. Two more chances fell for the Blues striker around the hour mark but both fell wide of the mark.
As the clock ticked down, the Wexford wall of yellow held firm to frustrate the 1853 strong crowd and condemn Waterford to their second home defeat of the season.
