Anna Dawson is the August winner of the Waterford Sports Awards in association with WLR and the Granville Hotel.

Dawson landed her first major Irish senior title following a titanic battle in the AIG Irish Women’s Close Championship at Ardee Golf Club. The Tramore golfer survived a spirited fightback by Holly Hamilton of Belvoir Park to take the title with a win on the final hole of a thrilling final. Dawson was one of the final qualifiers, and beat the tournament top seed along the way to a seismic win.

She also went on to represent Ireland at the Home Internationals – winning all three of her matches in the foursomes before picking up a crucial half in her final match, to help secure the title for her country.

Speaking when accepting the award, Dawson said: “I was delighted when I got the call – definitely my hard work paying off. It’s always so nice to get a win that’s recognised at home in Waterford. I was delighted with how everything went – I kept it simple, tried to play par golf the whole way around and thankfully, I was lucky enough to be able to lift the trophy on that Friday evening. The home internationals were amazing, it’s always such a privilege to represent your country.”

Having captured a major Irish senior title and finding herself playing for her country on a continuous basis, the sky is the limit for 22-year-old Anna – who isn’t getting ahead of herself just yet.

“I’m just starting my masters in marketing in Maynooth for the next two years, so I’m going to do that and avail of the golf facilities in Carton House where the Golf Ireland Academy is and try to progress my game more. We’ll see then when everything is over whether I’ll turn professional or not after the two years – it depends how my golf is going.”

Each month, an outstanding sports star will be crowned the winner of the monthly WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Awards.

The 12 monthly recipients will then gather for a black-tie Gala Banquet at the Granville Hotel in January 2026, as the overall WLR Granville Hotel Waterford Sports Star of the Year and next entrant to the Waterford Sporting Hall of Fame will be revealed.
