An all-Limerick Fitzgibbon Cup final takes centre stage at Croke Park tonight. Holders University of Limerick face Mary Immaculate College in a repeat of last year’s decider.

The clash features 10 members of John Kiely’s Limerick senior squad. Seven line out for UL, with three representing MICL. Among UL’s contingent is Passage and Waterford star Mark Fitzgerald. He will anchor the defence at centre-back. Fitzgerald has been a key figure for UL throughout the campaign, providing leadership and composure at the heart of the backline.

UL, captained by Limerick’s Colin Coughlan, have been in devastating form. They scored 10-55 in the group stages. They then beat UCC and University of Galway in the knockout rounds. Their attack is led by Tipperary star Darragh McCarthy, Adam Screeney, and Limerick forward Aidan O’Connor. This makes them a formidable challenge for MICL.

MICL topped Group D and advanced past UCD and DCU, the latter after extra time. Their forwards, including Oisín O’Farrell, who has scored 6-11 in the tournament, and Kilkenny’s Shane Walsh, will be crucial in testing UL’s defence, where Fitzgerald will marshal the backline.

The final promises a high-intensity contest. It will blend inter-county experience with rising college talent. For Fitzgerald, playing centre-back at Croke Park is a chance to showcase his defensive skills on one of hurling’s biggest stages.

Throw-in is scheduled for this evening. Fans can expect a repeat of last year’s thrilling clash between the two Limerick colleges.
