Amond wants to retire a Blue

"I'll happily stay here for the rest of my career and I hope it's not going to be one or two years. I think I can go for longer. I've played a lot of games this year in this league and in the National League. In theory it should be easier next year with only 36 league games."

Those were the thoughts of Waterford FC striker Pádraig Amond who spoke to media ahead of tonight's crucial League of Ireland Premier Division clash with Saint Patrick's Athletic.

Reflecting on the announcement of his new contract with the Blues, Amond says he can see himself retiring in the Blue.

"I'm going nowhere lads," Amond joked.

"Being back home for us now is brilliant for myself, my wife, my two kids. We're loving it. Loving life down here at Waterford."

Looking ahead to the match in Dublin, the Carlow native says the squad have been motivated from watching the Inchicore side's exploits in Europe this summer.

"Every game for us is huge now. St Pat's are going to be a very difficult team to play against. We've watched them recently in Europe. We've watched them with Envy. That's where we want to be next year."

"We've put a lot of effort into the first 30 league games of the season and it would be a shame to let it go. Between now and the end of the season, we've got to give ourselves the best opportunity. Six cup finals. We've got to give it everything we have in those games."

Asked about the prospect of Europe as a newly promoted club, Amond responded:

"You set out goals at the beginning of the season and for a lot of supporters, being in Europe was probably very far down on the list. But as the season goes on you re-evaluate and your goals change."

"It's great to be playing at this stage of the season for something and fighting at the right end of the table."

"There's a lot of teams fighting for Europe and it's great to be involved in it."

Reflecting on last week's win over Dundalk, Amond said:

"Getting the win was the most important thing. We played very well for 65, 70 minutes. By the time we get to the end of the season, we could be looking back on that last 15 minutes as probably one of the biggest 15 minutes of the season."
