Waterford FC have announced the signing of experienced English defender Alex Baptiste.

The 36-year-old joins the Blues having most recently played for Bolton Wanderers. Baptiste brings a wealth of experience to the RSC, having spent the majority of his career playing in the Premier League and EFL Championship.

He played for Blackpool during their stint in the English top flight while he has also lined out over 500 times for the likes of QPR, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End.

Waterford Football Club’s new Chairman and Owner, Andy Pilley added: “We are delighted to make Alex the first signing of the new era at Waterford FC.

“We have a very young and exciting side and feel with the addition of experience we can compete towards the end of the season with the play-offs in mind. Alex is a top professional who’s played most of his career in the top two leagues in England, to be able to persuade him to join Waterford is a real signal of intent for us all. We are delighted to see Alex join Danny Searle’s squad.”

Baptiste will join up with his new teammates this week and will wear the number 5 shirt at the club, subject to international clearance.

The Blues take on Wexford in Ferrycarrig Park on Friday night, before taking on Cork City in the league and Dundalk in the FAI Cup Quarter Final in what promises to be an exciting month at the RSC.
