Pauric Mahony retired from inter county hurling this week after shooting 3 goals and 522 points for Waterford in league and championship.
Former Déise boss Derek McGrath worked with the Ballygunner attacker at schools and inter county level. Mahony was top scorer in the 2015 league and the 2017 championship.
"A very clever player. A nine out of ten free taker but his general play is not appreciated as it should be. I remember that score against Kilkenny from the 2016 All Ireland semi final on the sideline. He could make things look very easy. A brilliant team player as well. Very honest, very hard working, just didn't tolerate messing of any sort. He had smarts. The ability to look around and find space. Nowadays Cian Lynch is heralded for coming deep from number eleven. Pauric was coming deep from eleven since he was a young chap. Lots of people would have perceived it as getting the handy ball but this is a fella with a brain that's working a lot quicker than other guys on the field. He could win ball over his head. He got a brilliant point in the Munster club final this year, showing his aerial prowess. Really good in the air for a left over right. A very intelligent and brainy player."
